If anybody has heard of acts such as Kylie and Danni Minogue, Sia, Iggy Azalea, Indecent Obsession (who made the hit song Kiss Me in the early 90’s), then you would know that they are pop singers who hail from “down under” in a place we call Oz, which is short for Australia.
Emmaline is a talented and gorgeous muso, who shares the same roots as all the aforementioned well-known acts. She also classifies her music under the Pop category, although with a slight deviation and new twist. Pop music, is short for ‘popular music’ which entails being relevant and moving with the times always. Emmaline pushes barriers in order to try her hand with Hip Hop, Trap Music, Rap and RnB. In her native land of Australia, a game which is similar to Rugby and American Football is commonly referred to as “Aussie Rules”. Even though she plies her trade in NFL Gridiron (American football league) territory, she doesn’t limit herself as she is constantly updating and recreating herself – testament to her “Aussie rules” mantra and upbringing.
Now residing in the US, Emmaline made this move in order to take her music career to new heights and access a bigger market. Lavatory Records had the opportunity and pleasure of talking to Emmaline about her journey in the music industry, her unique sound, some of the artists she’s worked with and so much more.
Lavatory Records: For those who don’t know you, who is Emmaline?
Emmaline: Emmaline is an Australian artist living in America, who writes her own music. She is the girl next door. She is passionate, a lover not a fighter, an animal lover, who is obsessed with music! Lol!
LR: When and how did you discover your passion for music?
Emmaline: I discovered my passion for music at a very young age. My father was obsessed with music, all genres, and it rubbed off on me naturally. I was still in diapers when I fell in love with music.
LR: Which artists would you say influence your music?
Emmaline: Too many to list. I’m influenced by music from the Beatles, to Etta James, To Portishead to Kanye West.
LR: You call your style of music “alternative pop”. For those who don’t know, please explain what genre this is?
Emmaline: My music is very original. But everyone always asks for a genre. So I came up with alternative pop because it’s definitely pop but not in the traditional sense.
LR: What is the Australian music industry like and what’s been your experience of it?
Emmaline: Its great but we are a big country with a small population so it’s only natural to have to leave and go to a bigger country to pursue music. Australia has some fine artists. Aussies rule!
LR: What are your thoughts about the changing times and the internet now spearheading the music scene?
Emmaline: Music marketing and streaming is changing rapidly. It’s like every day there is something new, or a new app to make a platform on. As an artist you have to stay informed and move with the times. I guess I’m still figuring it all out. You just have to adapt and make it work for you. The internet is an amazing thing, you have the ability to reach more people at the touch of a button.
LR: Which musicians have you worked or shared a stage with?
Emmaline: Right now I’ve been performing with my friends Visto and Goldy. I’ve played with a lot of musicians but my friends just happen to be some of the best new artists out there.
LR: If resources and time were not a factor, which artists and producers would you like to work with in the future?
Emmaline: I would love to work with Kanye. I would love to spend a day with Sia. I crossed one of my lists in that I got to write with B.O.B recently and Young Dro. There are so many musicians I would love to work with. I really want to work with a lot of rappers. I like 2 Chainz and Eminem. I love Jhene Aiko.
LR: Are you working on any projects/events that people should look out for in the near future?
Emmaline: I have a big song coming out on August 26 by Visto featuring myself and Domani Harris. Then my single called Trouble will follow that, then my E.P. which I’ve just finished.
LR: Do you have any special mentions that you want to shout out?
Emmaline: Shout out to Defient, Erikka, Will – my manager, the Democratz, Denny, Stroud, Visto and Goldy. These people are my support system and without them I’m just a girl at home writing songs 🙂
