Minus with the Take-Away!

Lavatory Records

The objective of an emcee is to leave Hip Hop fans with something to hold on to!  Be it memorable lyrics, underlying messages, songs or just glimpses of their uniquely differentiating personality traits. The idea is to leave an impression just like the show 30 Seconds To Fame, except with more opportunities and time to make the impression. This concept is called “The takeaway”.

Minus, one half of FnM and is completed by his band mate Falcone, is one emcee who has taken on the role of being Rap’s “negative integer”. Not to say he is in anyway neither negative nor toxic in terms of the essences that contribute to Hip Hop. Minus just happens to be a highly regarded punch-liner who leaves fans with something memorable to hold on to.

In this interview we spoke to the rapper about what to expect from FnM in the future, battle rap career and aspirations, his solo endeavours and his general perspective on a number of things within the industry.

KING//HER: not just saying it, but slaying it!

Lavatory Records

Within the world of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) expect the jargon to be usually geared around technological advancement and towards “the future”. This genre of music which was pioneered on the back end and power of micro-computers and through the use of synthesizers, subsequently gave life to the synthetic reality of the virtual. This means artists can project the image or sound they wanted into something that can be seen or heard, to a life-like image resembling or even replacing themselves.

Natsumi Miyata is a multi-faceted digital artist who doubles as a DJ, also known as KING//HER when she’s behind the decks. In such befitting fashion she’s a Techno/Minimal/TechHouse music fanatic who sets the paradigm of the digital code that her name represents through Binary, also known as the 1 (Masculine) and 0 (Feminine). While trying to be bold and majestic as a “KING” in the competitive world that historically had battle of the DJs and being the self-starter, she has to do it through “HER” and not lose essence of her maternal being and soul during this re-creation.

KING//HER who just recently launched her Independence Tour, was able to squeeze in some time during her busy schedule to discuss her newly started DJing career, her upcoming projects and other plans. The ambitious half Japanese half Zimbabwean music taste maker is based in Johannesburg, and has mapped out how she plans to “slay” the local and international clubbing scene one dance floor at a time.

Opportunity Cost – The cost of taking that free gig!

Lavatory Records

For many artists who are just starting out in their career there is always the possibility of finding themselves in a situation where gigs or bookings will be rewarded by “do it for the exposure” phrase as much more polite way of saying “you will not get paid”. Many will usually rant and rave and start talking about exploitation and being taken advantage of. However, there are a few things one must consider before writing off an opportunity. This again is a principle of economics in regards to Opportunity Cost, starting from analysis of one’s economic situation at individual level. By mastering the principles of being able to stay within and below your means, you would then be able to maximise off opportunities through developing an investment.

What we are saying at Lavatory Records: STOP COMPLAINING! No one can do to you what you don’t allow. Think carefully before deeming situations as “exploitative”. Taking a free gig can be beneficial to one’s career if done under the right circumstances.

Ampli-Fire DeCheff gets amplified in the kitchen

Lavatory Records

What happens when you mix Hip Hop, with a dancer, engineer and a genealogy of a “cook”? The answer is Ampli-Fire DeCheff! Not to be confused with his good friend and homeboy Master Chef Toast, whom we have featured on numerous occasions on the Lavatory Records platform.

Ampli-Fire DeCheff who hails from Lebowa in Limpopo is renowned for his straight talk and direct punches. The in-your-face, “going for the jugular” trait is not only something that has been honed from battling in cyphers, but also dually something that is intrinsically him even in every day conversation. Befittingly, his birth name is Percy just like New Orleans rapper Master P, who is also known for his militant deliberation and drill sergeant-like rap delivery.

Affectionately known as Amp, the rapper took some time to talk to us about his orientation to Hip Hop, how he adopted his style of music and poetry, his forthcoming project called Doppler Effect and its unusual concept. Of course there are numerous other things Amp also shared with us, to get us “amped up” on what he has been cooking up.

Tony Dangler exudes the answer to “Who’s The Boss”

Lavatory Records

Many people who follow the underground Hip Hop scene would have known Tony Dangler as Fudge Fugitive, before he adopted his new alias. The dangling may just be a personification of his cool, laid back nature and smooth rhyming, which ultimately contributes to the different flavours you can find within the Revivolution Clique.

With Tony, being the boss is not necessarily the Hip Hop association that you find with the Rick Ross’ or the Birdmans’ about getting paid and having people to pay. In Tony’s instance it’s about embodying being an emcee (MC) as a form of mastery and that mastery of self. Since partaking in the Sprite Uncontainable Search which took him all the way to New Orleans a few years ago, he’s gone through some redefining moments. When one’s horizons expand, perspectives change and the possibilities become infinite.

Since then he’s released his collaboration album with Canadian producer, Sam Static called Tone Static EP, which was released towards the end of 2015. We reached out to Tony after having previously chatted to his Revivolution mates ImproPoe and Inferno Williams. We spoke to Mr “Swank_N_Dank” about his latest project, his coming of age and name switch, and his battle rap days among other things.
