DJ Neo SA’s larger than life personality is personified by his towering frame. Not only does the breadth of his capabilities apply to his height, it also extends itself to the amount of genres that he plays at a given set – as he likes to mix it up a bit.
With youth comes the need to experiment, take risks and still discover one’s sound without limiting yourself. This is the stage at which the Alberton-based DJ Neo SA, born Neo Dube, is at in his career. We quizzed the lively and sociable young man on his recently launched career – from his sound, memorable moments thus far and career ambitions.
Lavatory Records: Who is DJ Neo SA professionally and as a person?
DJ Neo SA: I am an outgoing DJ always trying new things that other DJs are afraid to do. In person, I’m a relaxed individual who likes to get to know new people and am a guy who you give a laugh for the day.
LR: How did you discover your love for DJing?
DJ NSA: I’ve always been interested in music. Every time people would see me I would have my earphones on, even when studying. I went to an event where I saw big name DJs in the industry playing songs I liked back then without breaks or pauses, instead they put them all together and made them go together smoothly which made me want to do the same thing in 2012.
LR: You’ve started releasing your set of mixes as of late, how would you classify your sound and style of music that you like to play?
DJ NSA: Different because all the DJs that you hear these days play either house, hip hop, and deep house. I’ve pushed myself to the edge by playing all those genres to accommodate everyone and to have my own style.
LR: What has your experience of being a DJ been like so far in the local music industry?
DJ NSA: It has generally been slow but that hasn’t stopped me from reaching my main goal, which I plan on pursuing in the next few years.
LR: Many DJs also tend to be music producers as well; can we expect you to take that route as well?
DJ NSA: To be honest I will take that route but in the future. I am not rushing it at the moment. I believe that you should first master the project you’re busy with before you move on to your next project. So yes I will pursue that route but not anytime soon.
LR: In recent years there’s been a “boom” of DJs, what sets you apart from the rest?
DJ NSA: (Uhm) well firstly am the tallest DJ at the moment (ha ha) and my style and ways. I play very differently to Black Coffee, Black Motion and Shimza that just a few of the ‘top dogs’ in the industry.
LR: What was your most memorable place/ gig that you played at?
DJ NSA: My most memorable gig I played at was my first gig in Diepkloof, Soweto. I was given a DJ set and had to play in front of 1000 to 1500 people. When I was finished with my set the crowd wanted me to carry on and fought for me to play again.
LR: Which other DJs would you like to play alongside on a big stage should the opportunity arise?
DJ NSA: I would really enjoy if I could play alongside Black Coffee, Shimza, Lulo Cafe, Black motion, Major League DJz and DJ Christos.
LR: What are your other interests and what do you do to relax?
DJ NSA: Playing PlayStation, reading and obviously listening to music.
LR: Do you have any gigs or projects people can look out for in the near future?
DJ NSA: I will be uploading a mix on the 27th May for the spring fiesta DJ competition. In June I will be uploading a deep house mix, July will be my hip hop mix, and August will be my mixture mix with all genres that I play.
LR: Any special mentions you want to shout out?
DJ NSA: I would like to firstly thank my parents for the financial and emotional support towards my DJ career and school. DJ Cheeze SA for teaching me the skills I have been taught and learnt in the development of my career. To my friends and family that supported me and still support me, as well as everyone else who follows DJ Neo SA.
