New York rapper Jay-Z released the Black Album in 2003. Slated as his retirement album at the time, hip hop and music fans alike were left wondering what had brought this abrupt ending and “what would happen next?” As a result the hip hop community gave Hova (Jay-Z’s other alias) an early induction into the Rap Hall of Fame as one of the GOATs (Greatest of All Time).
On our side of the world, we have another rapper, “J”, in the form of JahMaine who released his maiden project entitled Black. Unlike his American contemporary, Jahmaine‘s aim with this “coloured” title would be to mark his genesis in the game to epic status. Particularly, as both rappers‘ names refer to deities (though loosely on Jay-Z‘s part), which would signify destiny in the mark that the colour black ultimately meant the continuation of making music. As the saying goes; an artist’s job is never done! We spoke to JahMaine about his musical origins, the making of the Black project, his opinion of the local music industry and what he considers as “good music” (another Jay and Rocafella music link)!

New Orleans rapper Juvenile said on his break out single entitled Ha : “That’s you in that big body Benz, ha…”! The rapper, who was renowned for his ostentatious lyrics, was also a member of the rap group The Hot Boys. If one considers how our guest FurnaceBenz came up with his name, one could not help being reminded of those lyrics referring to a luxury vehicle (possibly “hot” as in stolen), as a convergence of Juvenile’s style and associated frame of references.
In art there’s always the need to see beneath the surface. A person may give the impression of “living it up”, yet there is the unseen and hardly depicted long journey of the struggle, which encompasses having to sacrifice, doing thankless work, etc. At Lavatory Records we aim to give you the full insight through our guests. FurnaceBenz is an associate producer of the PurvGang and also delves into rapping. He recently collaborated with Blingager of the PurvGang on a track called Black Callin’ which is a single for an upcoming collabo project. We had Mr Benz’ in the building to tell us more about himself, his future plans and just outlook on his world around him.
On the song Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems the late Notorious BIG emphasises the victory of having the luxury to afford a rolex as he raps “Throw your rollies in the air, wave em side-to-side keep your hands high…” This is seen as a status upgrade for someone who’s made it from the bottom to the top. Rollie Mallorca, is one dude who is making sure that that while he represents the hood, he will stunt on em because he means what he says and says what he means! He’s a straight shooter who timeously gets to the point like a swiss watch!
Strange enough RCD Mallorca which is a segundo division football team in Spain, is a perfect description of his current plight. The pursuit of getting into La Liga (Spanish premier division) is a viable target as it is for Rollie to ball in the big league, all thanks to hooking up with Tre and TnT Corporation. We had a chat with Rollie regarding his background, his future plans and of course his new affiliation with TnT Corporation!
